Although men were less likely to be religious before these experiences, gender differences in religious beliefs disappeared after the encounters. The research was published in the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs.

Ayahuasca is a traditional psychoactive brew made from the Banisteriopsis caapi vine and the Psychotria viridis leaf, used for centuries in Amazonian spiritual and healing ceremonies. It contains DMT (dimethyltryptamine), a powerful hallucinogen, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) from the vine that make DMT orally active.

The experience typically involves intense visual and emotional effects, self-reflection, and sometimes physical reactions such as vomiting or diarrhea, known as “purging.” Ayahuasca is traditionally consumed in ceremonial settings led by shamans or facilitators who guide participants through the psychological journey.

During ayahuasca experiences, many users report vivid encounters with perceived entities or beings—often described as spirits, guides, animals, ancestors, or alien-like intelligences. These entities are frequently experienced as autonomous, emotionally engaging, and capable of communication, sometimes offering insights, guidance, or healing.

While some interpret these encounters as spiritual or metaphysical in nature, others view them as complex manifestations of the subconscious mind. Neuroscientific explanations suggest they may arise from altered activity in brain regions related to agency, social cognition, and imagination under the influence of DMT.

Study author Yitong Xin and her colleagues note that existing evidence suggests acute psychedelic effects have the potential to transform religious beliefs, and that gender may be an important factor influencing certain psychedelic outcomes. With this in mind, they conducted a study to investigate whether religious beliefs change after an entity encounter during an ayahuasca experience—and whether these changes differ between men and women.

The study included 415 ayahuasca users recruited as part of a larger survey project. Their average age was 39 years, and 61% were male. Seven percent had an advanced professional or doctoral degree, 21% had a master’s degree, and 31% held a bachelor’s degree. About 43% were married or living with a partner.

Participants reported their religious identity both before and after their ayahuasca entity encounter. They were asked whether they identified as atheist, agnostic, having religious beliefs in something that might be called ultimate reality, a higher power, God, or a universal divinity, or “other.”

Results showed that before the entity encounter, 20% of men and 8% of women identified as atheists, while 27% of men and 23% of women identified as agnostics. This indicated that men were generally less religious than women.

After the entity encounter under the influence of ayahuasca, the proportion of men identifying as atheists dropped to 7%, while the proportion of women dropped to 3%. Similarly, the share of agnostics declined to around 11–12% among both men and women. Correspondingly, more participants reported having religious beliefs.

“Findings from this study suggest that sex is associated with perceived changes in religious beliefs from before to after an entity encounter experience among ayahuasca users. Specifically, males demonstrated greater changes in religious beliefs compared to females, suggesting differences in how males respond to the effects of ayahuasca and in how they interpret associated spiritual experiences,” the study authors concluded.

The study sheds light on how religious beliefs may shift following entity encounters during ayahuasca experiences. However, it is important to note that the study did not include a control group, so it remains unclear whether the observed changes in religious identity were directly caused by the entity encounters or by other factors that may have coincided with the experience.

The paper, “Sex Differences in Religious Beliefs Before and After an Entity Encounter During an Ayahuasca Experience,” was authored by Yitong Xin, Roland R. Griffiths, and Alan K. Davis.

URL: https://www.psypost.org/ayahuasca-entity-encounters-linked-to-lasting-religious-belief-changes-especially-in-men/

-------------------------------------------------

Private, vetted email list for mental health professionals: https://www.clinicians-exchange.org

Unofficial Psychology Today Xitter to toot feed at Psych Today Unofficial Bot @PTUnofficialBot

NYU Information for Practice puts out 400-500 good quality health-related research posts per week but its too much for many people, so that bot is limited to just subscribers. The results show that relationship satisfaction was especially important for men in these relationships, while women’s satisfaction was more closely tied to sexual functioning. Notably, older women dating younger men reported higher levels of sexual satisfaction, arousal, and orgasm compared to younger women dating older men.

The idea that age-gap relationships challenge social expectations has long intrigued psychologists. While popular belief suggests that younger women often pair with older men due to evolutionary advantages like financial security or reproductive goals, newer social realities have started to shift those patterns. The research team behind the new study wanted to better understand how people in modern age-gap relationships—across a range of genders and sexual identities—experience intimacy, satisfaction, and well-being.

Prior research has focused heavily on heterosexual couples and often explained preferences using evolutionary theories. These models suggest that men seek younger women for reproductive reasons, while women prefer older men for resources and stability. But these theories do not account for a growing number of people, especially older women and individuals in same-sex relationships, whose preferences and experiences don’t follow this traditional script.

“I am a sex researcher and a psychosexual therapist. Our team comprises psychologists and healthcare practitioners who bring balance to the research team, contributing ideas, approaches, and diverse perspectives,” said study author Samantha Banbury of London Metropolitan University.

“I have worked with age-gap couples who present unique challenges and pressures associated with their dating, including the social constructs surrounding older men or women dating younger individuals. Following a literature review, I found limited research with insufficient evidence, which limits our scope of working with diverse relationships.”

The researchers recruited 126 individuals who were currently in age-gap relationships, defined as having a minimum age difference of seven years. Participants were recruited through social media platforms like TikTok, Reddit, and LinkedIn using a snowball sampling approach. The sample was diverse in terms of gender, sexual identity, and ethnicity, though heterosexual participants were overrepresented.

Participants completed a battery of questionnaires measuring various aspects of their relationships. These included validated scales assessing sexual functioning (tailored for males and females), relationship satisfaction, sexual self-confidence, and mental well-being. Participants also answered questions about how long they had been in the relationship and whether they perceived any financial gain from dating an older or younger partner.

The researchers then conducted statistical analyses to look for patterns in the data. They used correlation and regression models to explore the strength of the relationships between age-gap dynamics and outcomes like sexual satisfaction and relationship well-being. They also used non-parametric tests to compare specific groups—for example, older women dating younger men versus younger women dating older men.

For men, relationship satisfaction was the strongest predictor of how positively they viewed their age-gap relationship. Across all age-gap groups, men who were more satisfied with the relationship reported better sexual functioning, including greater desire, fewer problems with erection and ejaculation, and higher sexual satisfaction. These effects were particularly pronounced among older men dating younger women.

However, men dating other men showed less pronounced associations between age-gap and sexual functioning, possibly due to the small number of participants in this group.

For women, the story was more nuanced. Relationship satisfaction, sexual satisfaction, and the absence of sexual pain all predicted how positively women viewed their age-gap relationship. Women in relationships with significantly younger men reported better sexual arousal, lubrication, orgasm, and overall sexual satisfaction. In contrast, younger women dating older men reported lower levels of sexual functioning.

One of the more unexpected findings was related to perceived financial benefit. Younger women dating older men and younger men dating older men were more likely to report that they gained economic stability from the relationship. In contrast, women dating younger men did not report any financial advantage, suggesting that emotional and sexual factors were more important in those relationships.

Another significant finding related to the length of the relationship. Women in relationships that had lasted between six months and a year reported the highest levels of lubrication and orgasm. After this period, these measures appeared to plateau or decline, suggesting a potential “honeymoon” phase in sexual satisfaction for some women in age-gap relationships.

Banbury said the findings were not particularly surprising. “I had previously conducted a small-scale study with a student, examining 24 older women who dated younger men and subsequently scored higher in levels of emotional intelligence, sexual confidence, and sexual functioning compared to similarly aged women who dated men of their age. I find societal attitudes towards age-gap relationships more surprising than the outcomes of our research and the stigma associated with them, which is often judgmental, regardless of gender.”

“Relationships are diverse, and what works for you is crucial, provided, of course, that it remains within the legal realms of acceptability,” Banbury continued. “People often become overly concerned with others’ opinions, which perpetuates the stigma associated with perceived normality and conventions that do not suit everyone. Nor should they. We should focus on establishing our own sense of normality based on what works for us.”

The study offers new insights, but it also has some limitations. The sample size, especially for same-sex and gender-diverse participants, was relatively small. This made it difficult to draw strong conclusions about these groups. The researchers used self-report questionnaires, which are subject to social desirability and memory biases. Some of the measures were also originally designed for heterosexual populations and may not fully capture the experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals.

“Although the sample size was adequate, a larger one would be beneficial,” Banbury noted. “This variation has led to challenges in comparing genders and sexualities. Further investigation into same sex age gap relationships is necessary to inform psychosexual services that support these communities. The lack of available assessment tools exacerbates this issue, as they are not always designed for diverse gender and sexuality groups, which limits participation.”

“Age gap relationships are diverse,” she added. “Our understanding of them is limited. The crucial aspect is to pursue what feels right for you – conventions are mutable social constructs, not immutable entities. Dating isn’t solely for the young, and both dating and relationships are sufficiently varied to warrant exploration. Psychology News Robot
DATE: June 07, 2025 at 04:00PM
SOURCE: PSYPOST.ORG

** Research quality varies widely from fantastic to small exploratory studies. Please check research methods when conclusions are very important to you. **
-------------------------------------------------

TITLE: Study links anorexia nervosa to elevated opioid receptor levels in brain’s reward centers

URL: https://www.psypost.org/study-links-anorexia-nervosa-to-elevated-opioid-receptor-levels-in-brains-reward-centers/

A new neuroimaging study published in Molecular Psychiatry provides evidence that anorexia nervosa is associated with altered activity in the brain’s opioid system. Women with anorexia had higher levels of mu-opioid receptor availability in key areas of the brain involved in reward processing, such as the caudate, putamen, and nucleus accumbens. Interestingly, these changes occurred without any difference in brain glucose metabolism between anorexia patients and healthy controls, suggesting a specific disruption in the neural pathways that regulate motivation and pleasure.

Anorexia nervosa is a serious psychiatric condition marked by extreme food restriction, intense fear of gaining weight, and a distorted perception of one’s body. The disorder most commonly begins during adolescence and primarily affects women. Anorexia is associated with a wide range of health complications, including organ damage, hormonal imbalance, and in severe cases, death. It also has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric illness.

Current treatments focus on restoring weight, improving body image, and changing disordered eating habits through a combination of psychotherapy, nutrition counseling, and sometimes medication. But many patients struggle with relapse or chronic symptoms, and the underlying biology of the disorder remains poorly understood.

The research team conducted the study to investigate whether changes in the brain’s endogenous opioid system might help explain the symptoms of anorexia. The mu-opioid receptor, a key part of this system, plays a role in both the regulation of hunger and the experience of pleasure from food. Previous studies have shown that activation of this receptor increases food intake and that its availability is altered in obesity. But until now, relatively little was known about its involvement in anorexia.

To explore this question, the researchers recruited 13 women with anorexia nervosa and 13 healthy women of similar age. All participants were screened through a series of physical and psychiatric evaluations. The women with anorexia were underweight and had been diagnosed within the past two years. None of the participants had a history of other psychiatric disorders or conditions that could affect metabolism or brain function.

Each participant underwent two types of brain imaging using positron emission tomography, or PET scans. One scan used a radiolabeled compound that binds to mu-opioid receptors, allowing the researchers to measure how available those receptors were in different parts of the brain. The other scan measured how the brain uses glucose, the body’s main energy source, during a controlled infusion of insulin and glucose known as a hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp. This technique allowed the researchers to assess brain glucose uptake under conditions that mimic normal metabolism. Participants also completed a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scan while viewing images of appetizing and bland foods to assess emotional responses to food cues.

The results showed that the availability of mu-opioid receptors was significantly higher in several brain areas associated with reward, including the caudate and putamen. The nucleus accumbens and thalamus also showed trends toward higher receptor availability, although these did not remain statistically significant after correcting for multiple comparisons. These findings suggest that the opioid system in people with anorexia may be hyperactive or hypersensitive in specific regions involved in processing reward and motivation.

Interestingly, there was no difference in brain glucose uptake between the two groups, indicating that basic brain metabolism remains stable despite severe weight loss. However, the researchers found a negative correlation between opioid receptor availability and glucose uptake in several of the same brain regions. In other words, individuals with higher mu-opioid receptor availability tended to have lower glucose use in those areas. This relationship may point to a compensatory mechanism that allows the brain to maintain energy efficiency while adapting to changes in the reward system.

In the fMRI portion of the study, there was no significant difference in how patients and controls responded to pictures of palatable versus bland food. The researchers noted that this may be due to the small sample size or individual differences in food preferences that were not directly measured.

Taken together, the findings suggest that people with anorexia nervosa may experience changes in how their brains process the reward value of food. The mu-opioid receptor system, which normally encourages eating by making food feel pleasurable, may function differently in these individuals. Higher receptor availability could reflect an attempt by the brain to compensate for reduced hedonic responses to eating, or it might play a role in the initial development of food avoidance behavior.

This altered reward response may help explain why individuals with anorexia often find eating distressing rather than pleasurable, even when they are severely undernourished. It also raises the possibility that targeting the opioid system with medication could one day be a strategy to help treat the disorder.

The study has several strengths. It is the first to use a combination of two advanced PET imaging techniques to examine both receptor availability and glucose metabolism in the same individuals. The use of a highly controlled insulin-clamp protocol also provided more precise estimates of brain metabolism than traditional methods.

However, the study also has limitations. It included only women, so the results may not apply to men with anorexia. The sample size was small, partly due to the challenges of recruiting participants for such an intensive imaging study. The researchers also did not collect detailed data on participants’ eating behavior during the study, which limits the ability to directly link brain differences to specific symptoms. Lastly, because the study was cross-sectional, it cannot determine whether changes in the opioid system are a cause or a consequence of anorexia.

The study, “Anorexia nervosa is associated with higher brain mu-opioid receptor availability,” was authored by Kyoungjune Pak, Jouni Tuisku, Henry K. Psychology News Robot
DATE: June 07, 2025 at 02:00PM
SOURCE: PSYPOST.ORG

** Research quality varies widely from fantastic to small exploratory studies. Please check research methods when conclusions are very important to you. **
-------------------------------------------------

TITLE: Feeling unseen fuels support for the populist right, study finds

URL: https://www.psypost.org/feeling-unseen-fuels-support-for-the-populist-right-study-finds/

A new study published in American Behavioral Scientist sheds light on why some citizens embrace right-wing populist attitudes, particularly in Western democracies. Researchers found that when people feel disrespected or unrecognized by political elites—not as individuals, but as members of the national community—it can trigger feelings of social identity threat. This threat, in turn, drives two emotional responses that help reassert a sense of belonging: contempt toward elites and rejection of national minorities.

Populism, and especially its right-wing form, has gained significant traction in recent decades. At its core, right-wing populism divides society into two camps: the virtuous, “ordinary people” and the corrupt elites. It often couples this framing with nationalist rhetoric, arguing that the interests of “natives” should be prioritized over those of minorities or immigrants. This worldview promises recognition, respect, and restored status for those who feel ignored by the political establishment.

Previous studies have linked support for right-wing populism to economic hardship or cultural change. But researchers Julia Elad-Strenger and Thomas Kessler suggest that these are surface-level expressions of a deeper psychological driver: a feeling of misrecognition. In other words, support for the populist right may arise from a sense that one’s value as a full member of the nation is denied. The researchers aimed to explore how this perceived lack of respect from the elites leads people to embrace divisive views that reassert their worth.

To test this theory, they conducted three studies in Germany, a country where the right-wing populist party Alternative for Germany (AfD) has gained ground in recent years. The studies combined surveys and experimental methods to test a proposed model: when people feel misrecognized by elites as nationals, they experience a threat to their social identity. To cope with that threat, they express contempt for elites and endorse negative attitudes toward national minorities.

In the first study, a nationally representative sample of 382 German adults answered a series of questions designed to measure their perceived recognition by elites and fellow citizens, social identity threat, contempt toward elites, and rejection of minorities such as immigrants, Muslims, Jews, and Black people. The results showed that people who felt unrecognized by elites reported greater feelings of threat to their national identity, and in turn, expressed more contempt toward elites and stronger rejection of minorities. This pattern held even after accounting for political ideology, education, income, and nationalistic orientation. Interestingly, feelings of misrecognition from peers—not elites—did not have the same effect.

The second study tested whether misrecognition could be experimentally induced and whether it would cause the predicted responses. A new sample of 155 German adults read a fabricated news excerpt that either portrayed politicians as recognizing or failing to recognize “ordinary Germans.” Those exposed to the misrecognition condition felt more threatened in their national identity, and in response, expressed more contempt for elites and greater rejection of minorities. Again, these effects persisted even when controlling for background variables.

In the third study, the researchers directly manipulated participants’ sense of being marginalized. Using a quiz and fake feedback, they told some participants they were “highly marginalized” as ordinary Germans, and others that they were “lowly marginalized.” Those in the high-marginalization group expressed significantly more contempt for elites and stronger negative attitudes toward minorities. While the manipulation was not fully randomized—participants had to answer quiz items a certain way to qualify for the feedback—the results provided additional support for the proposed psychological mechanism.

Together, the three studies provide a coherent explanation for how and why feelings of being “left behind” lead some individuals to adopt right-wing populist beliefs. Rather than economic hardship alone, it is the experience of symbolic exclusion—the belief that elites do not respect or value “ordinary nationals”—that drives these attitudes. This misrecognition is experienced as a group-based insult, not a personal slight. It undermines people’s sense of national belonging and spurs defensive responses aimed at restoring that sense of inclusion and status.

One way people reassert their worth, the study suggests, is through contempt. Contempt is not just dislike; it implies that the target is inferior and unworthy of respect. When people feel unseen by elites, they may respond by casting those elites as morally corrupt or undeserving of their positions. Another response is to look down on minorities, which serves to bolster one’s relative status in society. These behaviors help reaffirm a threatened social identity by comparing oneself favorably to out-groups.

While the researchers focused on Germany, they believe the psychological process they identified is likely relevant in other democracies where right-wing populism is rising. Their findings help explain why efforts to address populism through material compensation alone—such as economic relief—may fall short. If the underlying issue is a lack of symbolic recognition, then people may continue to feel excluded even when their material needs are met.

The study has limitations. The third experiment used a non-random assignment to conditions based on participants’ responses, which limits the strength of the causal claims. Also, while the researchers controlled for many variables, it is possible that other unmeasured factors could influence the results. The sample sizes, while adequate, may not capture the full diversity of experiences within the German population.

Future research could expand on these findings by testing the model in other countries and political contexts. It could also examine whether left-wing populism, which emphasizes different group identities and grievances, operates through similar psychological processes. Another open question is whether misrecognition always leads to rejection of minorities, or whether certain individuals or social conditions can interrupt this pattern.

The study, “The Role of Misrecognition in Driving Support for Right-Wing Populism,” was authored by Julia Elad-Strenger and Thomas Kessler.

URL: https://www.psypost.org/feeling-unseen-fuels-support-for-the-populist-right-study-finds/

In men with low adherence to the Mediterranean diet, higher levels of depressive symptoms were associated with elevated neurofilament light levels. This was not observed in men who closely followed the Mediterranean diet. The research was published in Neurobiology of Aging.

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that primarily affects memory, thinking, and behavior. It is the most common cause of dementia, usually beginning with subtle memory loss and advancing to severe cognitive and functional decline. The disease is associated with the accumulation of amyloid plaques and tau tangles in the brain (lumps of amyloid and tau proteins), leading to neuron damage and brain shrinkage.

Medical professionals use specific blood biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease to detect early development of the disease and assist with diagnosis. The main blood biomarkers include the amyloid-beta 42/40 ratio, phosphorylated tau (p-tau181, p-tau217), and neurofilament light chain (NfL).

The amyloid-beta 42/40 ratio shows the balance between two types of amyloid proteins in the blood; a lower ratio usually indicates that more harmful amyloid has built up in the brain. Phosphorylated tau (p-tau181 or p-tau217) is a protein that increases when there are harmful changes in tau proteins in the brain; higher levels are strongly linked to Alzheimer’s progression. Neurofilament light chain (NfL) is a protein that rises when brain cells are damaged; elevated levels indicate neuronal injury from Alzheimer’s or other brain diseases.

Study author Hilal Salim Said Al Shamsi and colleagues examined whether dietary patterns influence the relationship between Alzheimer’s disease blood-based biomarkers and symptoms of anxiety and depression. They focused on three dietary patterns: the Mediterranean diet, the Western diet, and the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet.

The Mediterranean diet emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, fish, and olive oil, and is associated with better heart and brain health. The Western diet, high in red meat, processed foods, sugar, and saturated fat, has been linked to a greater risk of obesity, cardiovascular disease, and cognitive decline. The DASH diet focuses on reducing sodium and increasing intake of nutrient-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy to help lower blood pressure and promote overall health.

The researchers analyzed data from 89 cognitively unimpaired participants from the Australian Imaging, Biomarker and Lifestyle (AIBL) study of ageing. The AIBL study is a longitudinal project with participants re-assessed at 18-month intervals. All participants were aged 60 or older at baseline. The average age was 75, and 44% were male.

To be included, participants had to complete the Cancer Council of Victoria Food Frequency Questionnaire and undergo blood analysis for Alzheimer’s-related biomarkers (p-tau181, Aβ40, Aβ42, NfL, and GFAP) at their 72-month follow-up. Researchers used the food frequency data to calculate how closely each participant’s diet resembled the three targeted patterns. Participants also completed assessments of anxiety and depression using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale.

Results showed that Mediterranean and DASH diet scores were moderately correlated, indicating that individuals who adhered to one diet often adhered to the other. This reflects the shared emphasis on plant-based and minimally processed foods. By contrast, adherence to these two diets was only weakly correlated with adherence to the Western diet.

The researchers also found that individuals carrying the ε4 variant of the APOE gene—a genetic risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease—had higher levels of p-tau181 and NfL biomarkers.

Among men with low or medium adherence to the Mediterranean diet, greater depressive symptoms were associated with higher NfL levels. This association disappeared in men with high adherence to the diet. A similar pattern was found among individuals without the APOE ε4 allele: those with low or medium Mediterranean diet adherence showed a positive association between depressive symptoms and NfL levels, but this link was absent in high adherents. No significant relationships were found between depressive symptoms and Alzheimer’s biomarkers for the DASH or Western diet.

“Our study presents evidence of the moderating effect of the MeDi [Mediterranean diet] on the relationship between depressive symptoms and specific Alzheimer’s disease-related blood-based biomarkers, particularly highlighting the influence of genetic predispositions and sex differences. Overall, a higher MeDi score potentially mitigates some of the negative impact depressive symptoms have on Alzheimer’s disease-related blood-based biomarker alterations,” the authors concluded.

The study sheds light on the complex links between diet, mood, and Alzheimer’s disease biomarkers. However, the authors caution that the cross-sectional design does not allow causal conclusions. It remains unclear whether the differences in associations between depressive symptoms and NfL levels were caused by dietary patterns or by other unmeasured factors.

The paper, “The moderating effect of diet on the relationship between depressive symptoms and Alzheimer’s disease-related blood-based biomarkers,” was authored by Hilal Salim Said Al Shamsi, Samantha L. Gardener, Stephanie R. Rainey-Smith, Steve Pedrini, Hamid R. Sohrabi, Kevin Taddei, Colin L. Masters, Ralph N. Martins, and W.M.A.D.
