As someone who grew up in that time period, and learned to program C from the Borland Turbo C++ user manual, it truly is a lost art form.
This is also one of the reasons I've stayed with #FreeBSD as well as it has good documentation, and people care about it and try to keep it up to date.

@encthenet I remember tinkering with the manuals of my printer and the driver-editor of wordperfect to make my own fonts.
@microblogc Yeah, back then you could order HP printer protocol manuals for free! I got the PCL and PJL manuals. It was fun to be able to make my dad's HP LJ4 display read whatever I wanted it to.
I also wrote a program to print ascii documents 4 up on an HP InkJet to save paper.
