@digitalcourage @rfi

Hi @sarahjamielewis
Do you happen to have a blogpost that describes the rationality behind the ways @cwtch is distributed for android?

In particular why not #fdroid and #accrescent?
This is a honest question, asked because I aim to adjust my security practice from knowledge obtained.

And the question to adjust my security practice came after reading this guide:

Question regarding #fdroid

How common are reproducible and by that dev signed builds in fdroids repos yet? And if uncommon why is that, and will this change anytime soon?

> F-Droid supports reproducible builds of apps, so that anyone can run the build process again and reproduce the same APK as the original release. This means that #FDroid can verify that an app is 100% free software while still using the original developer’s APK signatures. F-Droid verifies reproducible builds using APK signature copying.

@fdroidorg I understand, but note that more hands are needed on many things.

I like f-droid and recommend it to others since many years and will continue to do so.

Currently I'm going critically through this guide, and aiming to find out how much is factual.
anarsec.guide/posts/grapheneos
It's a guide directed towards anarchists with high security needs.

Their advice is against #fdroid in its current form and that guide will circulate widely.
So reading blogposts and correcting potential errors is valuable for fdroid too.

I don't understand your entitlement that suggests only coding is valuable contribution.

I'm reading though some critique of #fdroid regarding their security approach.

Is the following still true in essence?

>It turns out the official F-Droid client doesn’t care much about this [sandboxing] since it lags behind quite a bit, targeting the API level 29 (Android 7.1) of which some SELinux exceptions were shown above.

#Catima 2.35.0 is out!

This release lets you further tweak the barcode size in the fullscreen view and slightly improves barcode finding reliability when scanning or loading a barcode from an image or PDF file. It also fixes a crash when trying to load a pkpass file without a barcode in it.

Coming soon to an app store near you :)

For Android users, you might want to test the Futo keyboard. Its nice to set up and use, and is very privacy focused. Good keyboards are hard to find in Android (imo), and Im very keen to dump Swiftkey asap. You can download Futo from Fdroid too.

keyboard.futo.orgFUTO KeyboardFUTO Keyboard is a modern, privacy-focused keyboard that runs fully offline. Enjoy swipe typing, autocorrect, predictive text, and more—no internet connection required.

I am looking for a FOSS alternative to Google Messages.

The main feature I want to keep is "device pairing:" I should be able to link it to my computer and type out messages with a physical keyboard. This is important because I don't want to write a long message on my phone, and some people I communicate with are unable to use another messaging system that works on desktops out-of-the-box.

I've tried several SMS apps on F-Droid, but none of them seem to have this feature.

I do
not need all the advanced features of RCS, nor do I need E2EE (because most of the people I use Google Messages to talk to are on iPhones).
