May Day: protesters rally across US over workers’ and immigrants’ rights

People organize in nearly 1,000 cities with focus on rallying against #Trump administration and ‘billionaire profiteers’

from #TheGuardian #Guardian
Rachel Leingang, Léonie Chao-Fong in Washington and Marina Dunbar in New York
Thu 1 May 2025 21.57 EDT

"The 1 May protests were supported by hundreds of organizations and set to take place in nearly 1,000 cities, organizers said, with a focus on rallying against the Trump administration and “billionaire profiteers”. Turnout was predicted to be lower than the previous two April #protests because 1 May is a weekday, but tens of thousands were expected to turn out. Cities across the US from New York to Seattle to Anchorage, Alaska, saw major demonstrations."

‘A trickle to a tidal wave’: behind the #Trump protest movement that launched on Reddit

From humble beginnings, the 50501 community is one of many coming together to resist the president and his policies

from #TheGuardian #Guardian
Rachel Leingang
Sun 27 Apr 2025 10.00 EDT

"A #50501 subreddit remains an active organizing space, where people discuss ideas for local protests, messages they should put on posters, strategies for getting more people involved. The movement is active on nearly all social media channels, and local offshoots have their own pages as well.

The group is planning its next day of mass #protest on 1 May, which will be focused on workers’ rights and immigrant rights. 50501 is far from the only group organizing around #MayDay, a frequent day of action for #labor groups around the world."

‘He felt our pain’: Catholic church in Gaza grieves Pope Francis’s death

Pope made nightly phone calls to the Holy Family #Catholic church from the start of the war in October 2023

from #TheGuardian #Guardian
Bethan McKernan in Jerusalem and Malak A Tantesh in Gaza
Tue 22 Apr 2025 10.32 EDT

"The first time he spoke to #PopeFrancis during the pontiff’s nightly calls to the Holy Family Catholic church in #Gaza City, the congregant George Antone, 44, found himself at a loss for words.

It was October 2023, a few weeks after #Hamas ignited a devastating war in the Gaza Strip by attacking #Israel. The #Palestinian territory’s tiny Christian community had taken shelter in the strip’s three churches, but that didn’t mean they were safe. An #Israeli airstrike had just hit the Greek Orthodox church, killing 18 people; soon, snipers and bombs would also kill civilians at the Holy Family."

Despair in Gaza as #Israeli aid blockade creates crisis ‘unmatched in severity’

Palestinians pushed into new misery as supplies of food, fuel and medicine run out in seven-week siege

from #TheGuardian
Bethan McKernan in Jerusalem
Sat 19 Apr 2025 12.54 EDT

"...Israel appears confident that it can maintain the siege with little international pushback.

It is also moving ahead with large-scale seizures of #Palestinian land for security buffer zones, and plans to shift control of aid delivery to the army and private contractors, exacerbating fears in #Gaza that #Israel intends to maintain boots on the ground in the territory long-term and permanently displace its residents."
