MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History May 23, 1933: The "Battle of Toledo" erupted when sheriffs' arrested picket leaders at the Auto-Lite plant in Toledo, Ohio, and beat an old man. 10,000 strikers blockaded the plant for seven hours, preventing strikebreakers from leaving. Ultimately, the crowd was broken up with tear gas and water cannons. The National Guard was called in the following day. The strikers held their ground against the troops, who shot and killed two of their members and wounded 15 others. The strike lasted from April 12 to June 3. The American Workers Party, led by Marxist A.J. Muste, supported the strikers. Ned Yeung<p>So by now I assume you've heard that the Canadian Union of Postal Workers has issued a 72-hour strike notice, effective tomorrow. Our posties could walk out in the morning, if Canada Post doesn't lock them out, like they did last Christmas.</p><p>Keep in mind that our postal workers have been fighting to keep postal services accessible to all. When they gave strike notice last Christmas, they proposed a rolling strike which would not have disrupted services. Canada Post responded with a lockout, which shut the whole operation down. Our posties went on to volunteer their time to ensure vital government assistance cheques were still delivered - for free. Our government responded by ending the strike with a Back to Work order, extending the current contract to May 22, 2025 (today), taking away the postal worker's position of leverage over the Christmas season.</p><p>Looking over the current offers on the table, Canada Post is dead set on increasing workload and occupational hazards, while resisting an increase in pay that comes close to making up for inflation and cost of living increases over the course of the last contract, while suspending benefits and hiring out part-time staff over the stability of full-time positions, demanding two-tiered wages so that newer employees can be paid even less.</p><p><a href="https://www.cupw.ca/en/cupw-receives-global-offers" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">cupw.ca/en/cupw-receives-globa</span><span class="invisible">l-offers</span></a></p><p>Now I've heard a lot of talk about "Canada Post should operate like UPS/FedEx/Purolator" (the latter of which is owned by Canada Post, I might add). This is based on a gross misconception that Canada Post fails to be profitable because of mismanagement or waste. That is not the case. What makes Canada Post different than the others is a guarantee of coverage and accessibility, which they have taken on as a crown corporation. This is why Canada Post loses its profitability, because of guaranteed service which private operations (including Purolator) do not have to abide by.</p><p>Canada Post is a national service and SHOULD be nationally funded.</p><p>When people say that "Canada Post should operate like a business", I don't think they realize what that means. It means that rural locations should not be allowed access to parcel delivery, period. It means that seniors should have no access to mail delivery that they can pick up themselves. It means that if servicing your area is not profitable, you don't get mail. Period.</p><p>My union conducts business all over Alberta, with locals in the big municipalities of Edmonton and Calgary, as well as locals in smaller communities all across the province. When Canada Post was shut down last Christmas, that meant that we had to switch to Purolator (FedEx has crossed strike lines and are not an option). That meant that we could not deliver to any of our locals in more rural communities. That meant that the only way they got mail was from a union member or staffer PERSONALLY delivering it to them.</p><p>This, on a permanent and national level, is what it would mean for Canada Post to "run like a business". No, that is not the answer. The answer is publicly funding Canada Post, and/or implementing solutions which the CUPW have proposed, such as implementing a postal banking system used in a number of other countries throughout the world.</p><p>The only answer that Canada Post corporate can come up with? MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Writing History May 22, 1859: Author Arthur Conan Doyle was born. He was most famous for his character, Sherlock Holmes. However, he was also a physician and a staunch supporter of compulsory vaccination. He wrote several articles denouncing the views of anti-vaxxers. But he was not particularly successful as a doctor. So, as he sat around waiting for patients to show up, he took to writing stories. Perhaps his most well-known book was The Hound of the Baskervilles (1901). But it was his 1914 Holmes story, The Valley of Fear, that piqued my interest. It is about the Molly Maguires, like my book, Anywhere But Schuylkill, and involves some of the same characters (but with different names). MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History May 20, 1946: The U.S. government took over control of the coal mines (again). On April 1, 400,000 UMWA coal miners from 26 states went on strike for safer conditions, health benefits and increased wages. WWII had recently ended and President Truman saw the strike as counterproductive to economic recovery. In response, he seized the mines, making the miners temporarily federal employees. He ended the strike by offering them a deal that included healthcare and retirement security.</p><p>The coal strike was part of the strike wave of 1945-1946, the biggest strike wave in U.S. history. During WWII, most of the major unions collaborated with the U.S. war effort by enforcing labor “discipline” and preventing strikes. In exchange, the U.S. government supported closed shop policies under which employers at unionized companies agreed to hire only union members. While the closed shop gave unions more power within a particular company, the no-strike policy made that power virtually meaningless.</p><p>When the war ended, inflation soared and veterans flooded the labor market. As a result, frustrated workers began a series of wildcat strikes. Many grew into national, union-supported strikes. In November 1945, 225,000 UAW members went on strike. In January 1946, 174,000 electric workers struck. That same month, 750,000 steel workers joined them. Then, in April, the coal strike began. 250,000 railroad workers struck in May. In total, 4.3 million workers went on strike. It was the closest the U.S. came to a national General Strike in the 20th century. And in December 1946, Oakland, California did have a General Strike, the last in U.S. history. </p><p>Then, in 1947, Congress passed the Taft-Hartley Act, which severely restricted the powers and activities of unions. It also banned General Strikes, stripping away the most powerful tool workers had. Today in Labor History May 20, 1916: 1,000 IWW workers on the Pennsylvania Railway went on strike for the eight-hour day in Baltimore, Maryland. At the time, the Penn was one of the largest corporations in the world. That same day, Another 1,200-1,500 Wobblies struck against Alaska Railway. In Detroit, Michigan, the IWW won its strike at Kelsey Wheel Works. They won the eight-hour day and a raise. And the IWW also won their strike at Bronson’s and Cox’s camp in St. Maries, Idaho.
